Predictable shifts in diversity and ecosystem function in phytoplankton communities along coastal salinity continua

چکیده

Salinity is a major environmental predictor of phytoplankton species richness and composition. We hypothesize that the variation in along coastal salinity gradients reflected essential ecosystem functions like resource use efficiency (RUE)—the proportion limiting converted into biomass. To test hypothesis, we analyzed time series variables from Chesapeake Bay Baltic Sea. relationship among salinity, diversity, RUE bivariate interaction association, structural equation model (SEM)—a form path analysis to resolve multivariate relationships interrelated variables. concluded intrusion marine water will lead rapid change diversity on fresh side. Despite drop, individual community functions, RUE, remain relatively resilient, reflecting functional redundancy. propose gradient also reflects trophic complexity, allowing stable at reduced diversity.

Coastal Microbial Mat Diversity along a Natural Salinity Gradient

The North Sea coast of the Dutch barrier island of Schiermonnikoog is covered by microbial mats that initiate a succession of plant communities that eventually results in the development of a densely vegetated salt marsh. The North Sea beach has a natural elevation running from the low water mark to the dunes resulting in gradients of environmental factors perpendicular to the beach. These grad...

Soil salinity and nutrients pattern along a distance gradient in coastal region

Soil salinity is considered as one of the major challenges in coastal agriculture in Bangladesh yet geographical extent of soil salinity and nutrients status have received little or no attention. This study investigated the patterns of soil salinity, total nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and sulfur between agricultural and fallow land along a 90 km distance from the coastline in Noakhali, Bang...

Ecosystem Services Transcend Boundaries: Estuaries Provide Resource Subsidies and Influence Functional Diversity in Coastal Benthic Communities

BACKGROUND Estuaries are highly productive ecosystems that can export organic matter to coastal seas (the 'outwelling hypothesis'). However the role of this food resource subsidy on coastal ecosystem functioning has not been examined. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We investigated the influence of estuarine primary production as a resource subsidy and the influence of estuaries on biodiversit...

Phytoplankton composition and diversity in Gorgan Bay, Golestan province

This study was carried out to investigate the phytoplankton composition in Gorgan Bay. Water samples were collected from 11 selected sites in Golestan bay, monthly from March to February. Thirty five genus were identified among which Bacillariophyta was the dominate group with 17 genus, while the Euglenophyta had the minimum. Abundance and biomass of phytoplankton showed spatial and temporal va...
